Bases of Detention

A person is subject to detention under Washington's Involuntary Treatment Act when: 

As a result of a mental disorder, the person presents a likelihood of serious harm or is gravely disabled.
RCW 71.05.150

If a Designated Mental Health Professional decides that a person is gravely disabled or presents a likelihood of serious harm due to a mental disorder, and they are not voluntarily accepting treatment, then they may be detained for involuntary treatment.
